There are no quick fixes or shortcuts to get rid of head lice. The only way to get rid of lice is to do a thorough comb-out. It is important that you break the life cycle of head lice by continuing to treat lice infestation until it is completely eradicated. Therefore, more than one comb-out is typically necessary. Coupled with determination, patience and persistence these steps are necessary for a successful head lice treatment

Items To Use During A Comb-Out:
1 roll of white paper towels torn into sheets and stacked. Before you start.
1 spritzer bottle filled with water.
1 Terminator Nit Comb
Do not try to use a plastic comb that may have come in an OTC treatment.
A sturdy metal nit comb is a must in any successful comb-out.
1 bottle of LiceLogic Head Lice Treatment Shampoo.
1 bottle of LiceLogic Daily Lice Prevention Conditioner.
1 bottle of white vinegar.
1 or 2 medium size bowls.
1 box of baking soda.
1 garbage bag or can.
1 floor covering-old newspaper, and old sheet, or towel.
1 regular comb.
1 regular brush.
4-8 large hair clips that will hold the hair in place securely.
1 pair of magnification glasses or visor.
1 shower cap.
1 hair dryer.
1 timer.
2 bath towels.
1 bright light.
1 bottle of LiceLogic Pre-Shampoo (for persistent cases.)
The Comb-Out Procedure:
- Gather all of your items in advance and place on a table or counter where you can fit and lay everything out. Make sure you have enough space to work.
- Sit the infested person under bright light next to your workspace (Bright sunlight will work well too).
- Place a towel around their shoulders and make sure they are comfortable as they will be seated in this position for a while.
- Put on your chosen magnification device and carefully inspect the hair by separating it in small sections to view the areas closest to the scalp. This where the freshest nits (eggs) will have been laid. The nits will be glued to the hair and will no t move if you blow on them or move the hair. (The further down the hair shaft you find nits the longer the infestation has been present).
- Take your comb or brush and detangle the hair thoroughly Place this brush in a sealed plastic Ziploc bag or re-useable container to disinfect later. (See Disinfecting Your Home).
- Apply LiceLogic Head Lice Treatment Shampoo to damp hair as directed by shaking the bottle first. Make sure you cover the entire head of hair. Massage vigorously into a lather for as long as needed and leave on for a minimum of 20 to 15 minutes. (You can leave it on up to 30 minutes for a severe case of if you previously used a shampoo containing a chemical pesticide.)
- Take the previously used comb or brush out of the container and comb through the shampoo to make sure all the hair is covered and there are no air pockets.
- Cover with a shower cap for the required time up to 30 minutes. Set timer.
- When the timer rings remove shower cap and dispose of.
Optional Procedural Suggestions and Tips:
• Easiest: You can do your comb-out with the LiceLogic HeadLice Treatment Shampoo still in the hair.
• Option: If you choose to rinse out the shampoo then apply a mixture of 1 part conditioner to 1/2 part baking soda after to the hair. Mix in a bowl first. If the mixture gets dry then spritz with water. You can use any conditioner on hand. (The LiceLogic Daily Lice Prevention Conditioner can be used when you are done with your treatment and you have washed your hair. Apply the LiceLogic Daily Lice Prevention Conditioner then as it will repel lice from coming back to your hair. It is not needed for the baking soda mixture.)
• Option explanations: It is easier to do the comb-out directly on the shampoo as it saves time and will ease combing. You can use the baking soda and conditioner on a future comb-out which will help drag out any stubborn nits that are still glued to the hair. (The baking soda and conditioner will not kill nits or kill lice.)
• For children or people with a very sensitive scalp that do not like the mild tingling feeling they may have from the shampoo (which comes from the peppermint essential oil) it is advised to wash the shampoo out thoroughly and to apply the baking soda and conditioner mixture to the hair. (For children under 2 years of age we recommend only using the baking soda and conditioner mixture.)
You are now ready to start the comb-out:
A thorough comb-out will take between 2 to 4 hours for long hair and 1 to 2 hours for short hair.
- Take your previously used ‘dirty’ regular comb and detangle the hair again and separate the hair into 4 sections by taking your comb and making a part from North to South and East to West.
- Twist and clip all 4 sections up securely into small buns. (If you are treating a person with short hair you can visualize the 4 sections).
- Have a stack of white paper towels torn into sheets handy. Spritz them with water to dampen.
- Gently spritz the hair with water to dampen as needed and to ease combing.
- Fill your bowl with warm water, 2 cups of white vinegar, and 2 cup of baking soda and place next to the paper towels.
- Take down the first section of hair and remove a small section from it no wider than the width of the Terminator Nit Comb. Clip the rest of the section up again.
- Gently place the Terminator Nit Comb on a 45-degree angle flush against the scalp. Be careful not to gouge the scalp as the comb is sharp.
- Pull the comb through the hair in one continuous motion without stopping from root to tip. (If you do small strokes you are not removing the debris but instead only dragging it around). If you need to detangle the section again with your regular comb do so.
- Clean your nit comb by dipping your comb into the bowl of hot water, vinegar and baking soda.
- Then wipe both side of the comb on the stacked damp paper towels. You will be able to see the lice and nits in the water which often float to the surface and on the paper towel. The nits will look like slightly shiny hard grains of sand or salt. The lice will often be rust in color (they can also be of a different color.)
- Take the same section of hair and pull it in the opposite direction and comb in one continuous motion again. Repeat until the section has been combed in all 4 directions – North, South, and East & West and is completely cleaned. Helpful Hint: A single strand of hair is more square than round. It has 4 sides and it can be glued to one side of one strand of hair. That is how small a nit can be so it is vital to comb each section of hair in all 4 sections.
- Take down the next section and repeat until entire quadrant of hair is complete and you do not see any more lice and nits. Then start next section (quadrant). Make sure the ‘clean’ section does not come into contact with the ‘infested’ sections.
- Do the entire head as directed and rinse the shampoo out when done and wash hair again with LiceLogic Head Lice Treatment Shampoo. (If you used baking soda and conditioner rinse very thoroughly to remove all baking soda and wash again as directed.)
- Apply LiceLogic Daily Lice Prevention Conditioner as directed. Then rinse.
- Detangle hair with a clean comb or brush and blow-dry completely.
- Manually inspect dry hair to check for any remaining nits. Focus
on the first 2 inches closest to the scalp and then the rest of the hair. Pull any remaining nits off by sliding them down the hair shaft and then dispose of.
- Spray hair generously with LiceLogic Daily Lice Repellant Spray.
- Repeat every 1 to 3 days until infestation is gone. (Use common sense, as every infestation is different. For a severe infestation repeat for 3 days straight.) And then 5-7 days later.
- Inspect the hair daily, as all it takes is one nit to be left in the hair to start the entire infestation over again. That is why getting rid of head lice is an ongoing process, not a one time treatment.
- Beware of getting easily re-infested if there is an outbreak in a school, camp or peer group. Often children who have been de- loused go back to school or camp and get re-infested again if the problem has not been eliminated in the setting or peer group.
Important Information For A Successful Comb-Out & Lice Eradication:
Do not use a dirty brush, comb or hair clip in the clean sections. Remember to keep them separate.
Thoroughly disinfect all items you used for treatment before putting them back into household circulation.
Do not let your children share hairbrushes, combs, and hair accessories!
Contain and dispose immediately of all trash related to lice removal or at a minimum seal in an airtight plastic bag. Place the infested person’s clothing in a sealed plastic bag to launder and have them change into clean clothing.
Clean the floor thoroughly around the treatment area and spray with LiceLogic Household Lice Protection Spray. Spray counter and wipe down as well. Getting rid of head lice in an ongoing process and often one treatment is not enough to remove all of the nits, many of which may be too small and microscopic and will develop over the next few days.
If you are dealing with a long-standing and persistent infestation you may want to add LiceLogic Lice Pre-Shampoo Treatment to your regimen. This LiceLogic Lice Pre-Shampoo Treatment Spray is also a Nit Glue Dissolving Spray and will help erode stubborn nit glue on contact.
Follow the Disinfecting Your Home guidelines available from the licelogic.com website.
If your child has long hair, braid it, twist it into a tight bun, or pony tail before sending back to school or camp to decrease the risk of re-infestation. Then spritz the entire head with LiceLogic Daily Lice Repellant Spray.
Explain to children to not share hats and hair accessories and to keep their heads from touching other children’s heads.
Inspect your children regularly for head lice, at least once a week.
If one person in your family is infested all members of your family
will need to be checked for head lice.
Lice will spread easily and quickly. We suggest having all family members exposed to another member with lice wash their hair with LiceLogic Head Lice Treatment Shampoo as a precaution even if there are no signs of lice infestation. Continue to monitor the situation for 2 weeks.
